Mallorca at a glance
Mallorca, spelled Majorca in many English texts, is the largest of the Balearic Islands in Spain and easy to reach: Palma airport lies about 8 km from the city centre. The island works best if you pick one or two bases. Palma has the cathedral, the old town and the airport bus. The Tramuntana mountains in the north-west hold Sóller, Valldemossa and Deià. The north-east has Alcúdia and Formentor, and the south-east has caves, coves and nature parks.
This Mallorca travel guide is independent. It is not the official Mallorca tourism website and has no link to the Balearic government, the Consell de Mallorca or any town hall. We give you adult prices, opening hours and access rules for 2026, so you can plan days that actually fit together.
The Tramuntana in Mallorca
The Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca are best reached on public transport or by rail. TIB line 203 links Palma with Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Port de Sóller, and the Sóller train and tram run from Palma to the port.

What to know before you go in 2026
Rules and changes that older guides often miss.
Cap de Formentor has a regulated period
In 2026 the road to the lighthouse was regulated from 15 May to 18 October, daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Unauthorised private cars may not drive the lighthouse section during those hours, and bus 334 runs instead. Check the dates for the year you travel.
Cap de Formentor →A small tourist tax on accommodation
The sustainable tourism tax is charged per person and night, from €1 to €4 depending on the type of accommodation. It is reduced by 75% from 1 November to 30 April, and children under 16 are exempt.
Where to stay →Driving in Palma is restricted
The low-emission zone covers the centre, and foreign number plates need separate authorisation. A bill to limit vehicles on the island was approved by the Consell on 5 June 2026, but it still needs parliament. Check the rules before you hire a car.
Palma →Weather can close places
A red storm warning was issued for Mallorca on 18 October 2026, with closures in Palma. In autumn and winter, check the warnings before mountain drives, and never cross a torrent bed in rain.

Getting to Majorca and around the island
Travel to Mallorca usually starts at Palma airport. The airport bus A1 runs between Palma airport and the city, and A2 runs to S'Arenal. The A1 single is listed at €5. Card payment is now accepted on EMT buses, so check the fare shown on the day. Taxis from the airport have a minimum fare of €16.95 under the 2025 tariff, which includes the airport surcharge and the first 7 km.
For the rest of the island, the TIB network connects towns. Line 203 links Palma, Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Port de Sóller. Bus 334 serves Formentor in season. Always check the current timetable before you go, because several lines change with the season.
