Mallorca Excursions Compared

The big Mallorca day trips each work differently: a timed cave visit, a train, a weather-dependent boat, a regulated road. This guide compares them by time, cost and what to check before you book.

Mallorca excursions: six ways to spend a day

Most Mallorca excursions fall into a few types. Some need a ticket for a fixed start time, such as the Caves of Drach. Some are scheduled transport, such as the Sóller train. Some depend on the weather, such as the boat to Sa Calobra. And some are about a road with access rules, such as Cap de Formentor. Knowing the type tells you what to book and when.

This page does not list tour operators. It helps you decide which excursion fits your days and what to check in any description. For a longer list of places, see things to do in Mallorca.

What each excursion asks of you

The details that decide whether the day works.

Caves of Drach: a fixed start time

Children from 3 to 12 pay €11.50 online and €12.50 at the desk, and under 3 is free. From 16 March to 31 October tours start at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00, with no 13:00 start. From 1 November to 15 March they start at 10:30, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30. The caves are closed on 25 December and 1 January. Arrive 15 minutes early and allow for a walk of about 200 m from the car park.

Caves of Drach →

Sóller train: a day in the mountains

The operator's timetable lists departures from Palma from 10:10, and from Sóller back to Palma from 9:00. The tram to Port de Sóller sells tickets on board. Pair it with a stop in the village or a boat from the port. Check the operator's current timetable before you plan a winter trip.

Sóller train →

Sa Calobra: a boat, not a bus

From 1 April to 31 October 2026 boats leave Port de Sóller at 9:50, 11:20, 13:00 and 15:00. Return times differ, so ask at booking. Young people from 12 to 22 pay €27 return, children from 6 to 11 pay €18, and under 6 is free. Sailings depend on weather and the operator asks for confirmation the day before. Online booking is advertised with a 10% discount on the price list.

Sa Calobra →

Cap de Formentor: a road with rules

In 2026 the regulated period ran from 15 May to 18 October, daily from 10:00 to 22:00. The beach section (km 2 to 8.7) has limited authorised parking, and the lighthouse section is closed to unauthorised private vehicles in those hours. A parking space at the beach does not allow you to continue to the lighthouse. Bus 334 links Alcúdia, Port de Pollença and the lighthouse in season.

Cap de Formentor →

Catamaran trips: read the route

A Bay of Palma catamaran leaves from the sea station opposite the Auditorium and runs five hours, either 10:00 to 15:00 or 15:30 to 20:30. The planned stops are Cova Verda and Cala Vella, and the captain may change the route. From Colònia de Sant Jordi a similar trip heads for Es Trenc. Snorkelling gear needs a €10 deposit.

Boat trips →

Weather and warnings

A red storm warning on 18 October 2026 closed parks and cancelled events in Palma. The caves report that rain does not affect normal visits, but that does not replace checking the road and any special cancellations. Never cross a torrent bed in storm conditions.

On your own or with a tour?

Honest trade-offs.

Choose a tour if

you do not want to drive on mountain roads, you have one free day, or you want transport and entry in one booking. Check what is included, such as entry fees, meals and pickup points, before you pay.

Go on your own if

you want to pick your own pace and time at each stop. Palma airport buses, bus 203 and the Sóller train cover several of the best-known places without a car. Driving in central Palma needs care because of the low-emission zone.

For a boat reserved for your own party, compare private boat tours in Mallorca, including group prices and skipper costs.

Catamaran cruise in Mallorca

A catamaran cruise in Mallorca is usually a five-hour trip with swim stops. The Bay of Palma tour leaves from the sea station opposite the Auditorium, either 10:00 to 15:00 or 15:30 to 20:30, with planned stops at Cova Verda and Cala Vella. A meal and drinks are included, and snorkelling gear needs a €10 deposit.

Catamaran excursion from the south coast

A catamaran excursion in Mallorca does not have to start in Palma. From Colònia de Sant Jordi (Moll d'Es Coto) the operator runs five-hour trips at the same two times, with planned stops at Es Trenc and Es Cargol or Cala Màrmols. The route is a plan, not a guarantee of every cove.

Palma excursions

Palma excursions fall into three kinds: the Bay of Palma catamaran, the Sóller train (60 minutes each way) and bus 203 to Valldemossa and Deià. Pick the one that matches the weather and the hours you have.

Mallorca excursions: frequently asked questions

Which excursion is best for a first visit?

Many first-timers combine Palma with a Sóller train day, then add the Caves of Drach. If you have a boat day, the Bay of Palma catamaran or the Sa Calobra sailing are the usual choices.

Do I need to book the Caves of Drach in advance?

Tickets are for a start time and can be bought online up to 30 days before. A phone ticket is enough, and there is no need to exchange it at the desk.

Can I do the Sa Calobra boat in winter?

Sailings are weather-dependent. For 1 to 21 November 2026 the operator lists sailings only on certain days, so check the exact days before you plan.

Can I drive to the Formentor lighthouse?

Not freely in the regulated period. In 2026 that ran from 15 May to 18 October, from 10:00 to 22:00. Authorised vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists may pass, and bus 334 serves the route in season.

Is there one pass for all excursions?

No. The caves, the train and the boats are separate systems, so each is booked separately.

See the coast from the water

Catamaran trips, the caves and the Tramuntana are easier as a tour in high season. Compare them with free cancellation.
